Nvidia is preparing to roll out a new high-performance computing design that will allow OEMs to create what the graphics maker calls a “personal supercomputer.” This HPC design from Nvidia will allow OEMs to build workstations that contain between two and four of Nvidia’s general purpose Tesla GPUs and allow researchers to run scientific and other massive workloads at their desks.

Ingres includes a number of features that benefit DBAs in Ingres Database 9.2, the latest update to its open-source database. The new features in Ingres Database 9.2 include improved backup and system recovery functionality. Ingres has also sought to simplify development of Web-based Java applications by adding support for scrollable cursors.

MySQL is offering a new query analysis tool as part of the new release of its MySQL Enterprise subscription service that helps DBAs find SQL code slowing performance. Dubbed MySQL Query Analyzer, the tool integrates with MySQL Enterprise Monitor.

Well-known rocker Neil Young and Sun Microsystems' James Gosling, the creator of Java, are working on a Java-enabled, hybrid-electric Lincoln convertible to compete for the Automotive X Prize, a competition for 100 MPG vehicles. The Linc Volt, Young's entry in the X Automotive Prize competition, is a 1959 Lincoln Continental Mk IV that has been repowered with a new series-hybrid system and runs on electricity produced by a generator powered by natural gas.

BT subsidiary Ribbit is allowing application developers to use its APIs to integrate voice communications into business applications such as Salesforce.com, as well as social networks. Ribbit hopes BT's big footprint will bolster its place in the Web services telephony space.

Adobe introduces Flex Builder “Gumbo,” Flash Catalyst – formerly known as “Thermo,” the availability of Adobe AIR 1.5, and a pre-release of the 64-bit Linux version of Adobe Flash Player 10. Adobe also opens up its cloud initiative, known as “Cocomo,” as a public beta.

JetBrains releases a new version of its IntelliJ integrated development environment for Java, IntelliJ Idea Version 8. The new version features support for SQL, diagrams similar to those in the Unified Modeling Language and more.

Microsoft continued the app dev rollouts at its TechEd EMEA 2008 Developers conference. It debuted a series of new features for Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0, including support for Windows 7. It also announced a new price promotion for Visual Studio 2008 and release of its Security Development Lifecycle (SDL) offerings.

A flaw in Adobe Reader could allow an attacker to take control of a vulnerable system, according to Core Security Technologies. Adobe has reportedly fixed the issue, and delivered a patch.

Sybase has bundled together PowerDesigner, Sybase ASE and Replication Server, as well as a 10-day engagement with Sybase Professional Services into a package called the Sybase IQ Real-Time Loading Solution. It has also extended support for ASE Cluster Edition to HP-UX and AIX platforms.

In its Open Strategy Yahoo introduces a sweeping application development approach, opening the multiple applications Yahoo offers to socialize them and foster new messaging and collaboration capabilities among Yahoo users. The move comes as Yahoo is swooning from a stock drop and scorn from investors that wanted Microsoft to buy the company.
