Improvements have been made to the SmileOnMyMac offering's efficiency, stability and displays.

In the ubiquitous world of PDF efficiency, a recent upgrade to SmileOnMyMac's PDFpen editing utility has been released, and it aims to make the PDF "pen to PDF form" route a bit easier to navigate.

In response to how the updates are significant to the user, Greg Scown, co-founder of SmileOnMyMac LLC, said, "These updates incorporate the first round of broad-based user feedback from the PDFpenPro 2.0 release, which are above and beyond our pre-release testing. There are a lot of off-spec PDF files out there that users send us or issues around those, and we've done a great deal of work from PDFpenPro 2.0 to 2.0.1 to accommodate and handle those files.

"For example, PDF files that have mismatched stream lengths, or other issues that don't match all the Adobe specs for PDF. Keep in mind that there are third-party PDF generators out there that don't necessarily adhere to all the specs and diverge in unique ways. The goal is to figure those out with customer feedback. That's what we strove to address in the update."

SmileOnMyMac, based in Portland, Ore., also strove to enhance the efficiency of PDFpen 2.0.1, Scown said.

"PDFpenPro saves times for form-fillers by allowing them to save their partially filled forms between edits. PDFpenPro saves time for document editors and assemblers by allowing them to split, combine and reorder PDF documents graphically. PDFpenPro saves time for form creators by providing a standard and straightforward Mac OS X interface for PDF form creation."

On its Web site, the company highlighted the latest updates to the PDFpen 2.0.1 utility. These updates include: multi-line text in forms display properly, size to fit improved for small point sizes, horizontal and vertical lines display properly, and old-style link annotations function properly.

Stability and performance improvements were made as well.

Pricing runs $49.95 (one to four copies), $44.95 (five to nine copies), $39.95 (10 to 99 copies). A PDFpen single-site license is $2,500, and the PDFpen worldwide site license is $4,500. For 1.X and 2.X, users can upgrade to 2.0.1 for free.
