How can I make a PDF made with Acrobat 6 compatible with Version 5 or 4?

Can a PDF be changed to be compatible with earlier versions after it has been made, or does that have to be done in the initial distilling from the source document? I have a PDF that is compatible only with Version 6, and no source file. How do I make it compatible with Acrobat 5 or even 4? –Jane Edwards

In Acrobat 6.0 (Standard or Professional), click on 'file', select 'reduce file size' from the drop-down menu and then choose either 6.0, 5.0 or 4.0 compatibility from the menu that appears. To batch process a large number of PDF files using this method, look at PDF-Reducer. -- Steve Harris

You can also do this with the Enfocus PitStop plug-in for Acrobat. --Ken Carlsen
