How-To: Conflict on Mac OS X prevents downloads of some PDFs and forces users to install older version of QuickTime.Q. I can't seem to download certain PDFs from the Web. Some PDFs download fine, but some give me the following error message: "The PDF file contains media that requires an additional player." I'm on Mac OS X. What gives?
A. The problem you're experiencing is the result of an incompatibility between Adobe Acrobat 7 and QuickTime 7 on Mac OS X. This bug prevents the download and playback of Adobe PDF files that contain QuickTime content, according to Adobe's Web support site.
The problem occurs on systems running Mac OS X versions 10.2.8 through 10.4, aka "Tiger," and applies to Acrobat 7 as well as Reader 7. Unfortunately, recent updates, such as QuickTime 7.0.1 and Acrobat 7.0.2, do not resolve the problem.
Until Adobe and Apple resolve the bug, there's a limited workaround: Download and install QuickTime 6.5.2. The solution is limited because it doesn't work with Tiger (Tiger doesn't support earlier versions of QuickTime). If you've already upgraded to QuickTime 7.0.1 and you're using Mac OS X version 10.3.9, try this QuickTime 6.5.2 "reinstaller."
Another solution might be to download an earlier version of Reader, such as 6.0. Some users report success with this solution, although that's not suggested on Adobe's technical support site.
