The State Corporation Commission of the
Commonwealth of Virginia has selected Hummingbird CompInfo to provide software
and services for implementation of a new case and document management system.
Hummingbird CompInfo will serve as prime contractor for the project, which will
feature implementation of CompInfo&singlequot;s LawPack case management system in concert
with the Hummingbird document management system.
The Virginia State Corporation
Commission is vested with regulatory authority over many business and economic
interests in the state of Virginia. The Commission combines legislative,
administrative and judicial powers into one authority, operates as a fourth
branch of government within the state, and has regulatory responsibility for
corporations, financial institutions, insurance, securities retailing and
franchising, trademarks and servicemarks, public utilities, and other areas of
commercial and public life.
In addition to performing many other
functions, the Commission receives and responds to complaints from citizens,
processes numerous types of claims, applications and filings, conducts hearings,
handles cases, issues orders and directives, and, where necessary, imposes fines
and judgments.
The case and document management system
to be implemented by CompInfo is expected to provide the Commission with a
significantly enhanced knowledge infrastructure to support its critically
important public mission. Using the configuration toolkit included in the
LawPack application, CompInfo will create tailored case management facilities
seamlessly integrated with Hummingbird document management. LawPack will be the
focal point for linkage to other applications and key systems within the
Commission, and will serve as a principal data store for analytical and data
mining applications. In addition, the implementation is expected to support the
Web-enablement of Commission-approved case-related and other data, allowing
citizens greatly improved direct access to governmental services.
Rod Piette, vice president,
government systems, Hummingbird CompInfo, said: "We are very excited to have
this opportunity as it marks another major milestone for Hummingbird CompInfo.
For a surprisingly large and diverse group of knowledge organizations,
meaningful institutional knowledge will increasingly be recognized as knowledge
about matters. This announcement confirms that LawPack is better positioned than
ever to meet the needs of matter-centric knowledge organizations with new
technologies, new services, and new ideas."
