Adobe has released a beta version of its upgraded Acrobat 3D, Acrobat 3D Version 8, which will allow users to convert 3D files into PDF files.

Adobe Systems Inc. announced March 29 that users can download the beta version of its Acrobat 3D Version 8, an upgrade to the original Acrobat 3D, enabling users to convert 3D CAD (computer aided design) files into PDF documents.

Designed for users in the AEC (architecture, engineering and construction) industry, as well as the manufacturing industry, Acrobat 3D Version 8 enables users to convert any 3D CAD file and other critical project data into a compressed PDF document that can be shared with other business users, partners and customers.

When the 3D file is converted to PDF, the upgraded Acrobat 3D allows users to utilize Adobe Reader software to view product structures as well as use commenting, measurement and cross-section tools on 3D objects in PDF files.

"Acrobat 3D and PDF have gained considerable traction in manufacturing and AEC over the past year as a means for driving 3D-based communication and collaboration processes, leveraging a ubiquitous, trusted file format," Tom Hale, senior vice president of the Knowledge Worker Business Unit at Adobe, said in a statement.

Acrobat 3D Version 8 is able to support conversion from 3D to PDF in a variety of formats, such as Autodesk Inventor, Dassault Systems CATIA, PTC Pro/Engineer, SolidWorks, UGS NX and I-deas. It also allows users to export CAD data from PDF into file formats such as STEP and IGES (initial graphics exchange specification).

The upgraded 3D software from Adobe also provides users with navigation tools that allow them to zoom, pan, rotate and analyze 3D designs while also featuring capabilities from Acrobat 8 professional, which enables users to create Adobe PDF documents from Microsoft Office, Outlook and Internet Explorer while also allowing users to combine documents, drawings and rich media content into a single PDF document.

The beta of Acrobat 3D Version 8 is available now for download for free and will cease operating on June 15, 2007. Acrobat 3D Version 8 is expected to be officially released in spring 2007 for a price of $955.
