'Define the Line' campaign strives to outline the difference between piracy, fair use, and copyright infringement.

Think the business world has a problem with pirated software? How about a new Ipsos study commissioned by the Business Software Alliance--of which Adobe is a member--that shows college students pay for their software only 32% of the time?

The survey of 1,000 university students and 300 faculty and administrators nationwide showed that downloading software is a “real problem” among students, according to academics interviewed. Among other findings, nearly two-thirds of students say they would potentially download pirated software.

The release of the study coincides with the debut of the BSA’s “Define the Line” campaign to reduce piracy at universities and colleges of software applications including Adobe Acrobat.

"We believe that colleges and universities, in their mission to objectively serve their students, will find 'Define the Line' to be a valuable educational resource in raising awareness among students about the importance of being good cyber citizens," says Diane Smiroldo, BSA vice president, public affairs. "Faculty, administrators and students are realizing the seriousness of illegal downloading and file sharing on university campuses. There are potential legal liabilities and technology downsides that simply aren't worth the risk."
