Version 7.0.2 of both applications includes fixes for JavaScript vulnerability and updater glitch.

Adobe Systems Inc. this week updated Adobe Reader and Acrobat for Mac OS to fix flaws that allow attackers to launch executables and alter folder permissions.

Reader 7.0.2 and Acrobat 7.0.2 are available for download at Adobe's Web site.

According to the company, one vulnerability could enable an attacker to launch an executable from JavaScript embedded in a PDF file. In a release, Adobe said that "the impact is minimized due to the fact that the applications can be executed only if the complete applications names and paths are known in advance by the attacker."

Adobe identified another flaw, also fixed in the new release, in which the updater in Reader and Acrobat can elevate folder permissions for all users when updates for either application are downloaded.
